Venerable Fr. Joseph Vithayathil

Fr. Joseph Vithayathil was born on July 23, 1865, to Joseph and Anna Vithayathil. He came from a prominent family in the parish of Manambady, Puthenpally in Ernakulam district, Kerala.

He is considered a co-founder of the Congregation of the Holy Family due to his unique and decisive role in the life of Saint Mariam Thresia and the early development of the congregation. Together with Mariam Thresia, he worked tirelessly with limited resources and, most importantly, trust in the providence of God, to nurture and establish the congregation.

After Saint Mariam Thresia’s passing on June 8, 1926, she entrusted the infant congregation to Fr. Joseph Vithayathil’s care. He continued to guide and lead the congregation with great care and concern. He took up the mantle of leadership, following what he believed to be the divine plan of God, and initiated new branches and projects, enlisted new members, and secured benefactors.

Fr. Joseph Vithayathil was affectionately referred to as ‘Pithavu’ by the CHF Sisters and the people, a term that signifies a loving father and shows respect for his role in their lives.

The bond between Saint Mariam Thresia and Fr. Joseph Vithayathil seems to have been sanctified by God, as they both passed away on June 8, albeit in different years. This has made June 8 a doubly blessed day for the Congregation of the Holy Family.

Fr. Joseph Vithayathil’s life and contributions have been officially recognized by the Catholic Church. He was declared “Venerable” by Pope Francis on December 14, 2015, a significant step on the path to potential canonization.

The legacy of Venerable Fr. Joseph Vithayathil continues to inspire the members of the Congregation of the Holy Family and serves as a testament to his dedication, leadership, and deep spiritual connection with Saint Mariam Thresia.
